Kerline Tofuri – Program Director

Kerline Tofuri was born and raised in Haiti, moving to MA in 1985. She now lives in Hanover, MA with her family. Her expertise in managing Jou Nouvo is informed by current and past professional work, personal life, and community collaborations. Kerline founded Jou Nouvo in 2007 to offer adult literacy and alphabetization programs to her community of origin, Bon Repos. Shortly thereafter, noting a similar mission, strong work ethic and geographic target in Partners in Development, she brought Jou Nouvo into PID’s umbrella, and expanded Jou Nouvo’s services to incorporate PID’s medical program. Based in the United States, Kerline travels regularly to Haiti to oversee Jou Nouvo’s operations. To date, Jou Nouvo’s specific projects include increased access to adult literacy through the National Alphabetization program, access to medical care an education, loans for small businesses, as well as a child sponsorship program.

In addition to directing Jou Nouvo, Kerline works part-time at Tufts University, as the Project Coordinator on a New Immigrant Health Grant at the John Hancock Research Center on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Obesity Prevention. Kerline also works in partnership with MataHari – Eye of the Day. MataHari and its Solidarity Network projects are community efforts that prioritize transformative dialogue, reflection, critical thinking & creative solutions and actions to address social injustices and human rights violations, including gender violence, slavery, sexual & labor exploitation and immigrant rights violations in the US and throughout the globe.

Prior to Tufts and MataHari, Kerline was a student of English as Second Language (ESOL), a trained volunteer and became a paid teacher, coordinator and manager of program in the field of Adult Basic Education and English as Second Language in the Greater Boston area for over 15 years. Working domestically and abroad, offering nutrition, education and social services in the United States and in her home of Haiti, Kerline invests in individuals and community, bringing a “New Day” to all.
