Of central importance to all other elements of this initiative, the goal of the literacy program is to provide adults of Bon-Repos with fundamental reading and writing skills in either or both French and Creole. Experience and trained staff at the Alexandre Dumas School in Bon-Repos provide two hour long evening classes three days a week to develop the literacy skills of participating members. With small intimate classes, the literacy program seeks to not only provide access to education, but also to instill a commitment to further their education beyond the first year of the initiative.
“For apart from inquiry, apart from the praxis, individuals cannot be truly human. Knowledge emerges only through invention and re-invention, through the restless, impatient, continuing, hopeful inquiry human beings pursue in the world, with the world, and with each other.” ― Paulo Freire, Pedagogy of the Oppressed
